Extinction Rebellion COP26 is fundraising for World Water Day actions in Africa

Extinction Rebellion groups in Africa are planning a series of actions for World Water Day to highlight water pollution and lack of access to clean, safe water.

Climate protest in Gambia, Africa: protesters marching with banner and flags. Banner says: Climate Justice = Social Justice

Extinction Rebellion COP26 (XR COP) is appealing to climate movement supporters to help fund 20+ actions. These include river cleans, conferences, well restorations and water tank installations. The actions mostly focus on awareness raising and increasing communities’ resilience in the face of increasingly erratic weather patterns due to the climate breakdown.

World Water Day is on March 22nd. The fundraiser will end on March 15th.

Leading up to World Water Day, XR COP will publish stories about people on frontlines around the planet that are fighting to keep their water clean and improve their community’s access to water. XR COP will also report live on the day and publish in-depth stories about the action in the following days.

XR COP particularly wants to highlight the links between destructive projects on the frontline and Global North companies and corporations. The Global North’s long history of colonialism, extractivism and exploitation is at play here and people living in the Global North have a responsibility to act. Donating to this fundraiser is one way to act in solidarity.

XR COP further calls for sustained, coordinated campaigns to fight these destructive projects. We encourage building global solidarity by linking activists and protests on the frontlines with parallel protests at these destructive companies’ headquarters and at the seats of governments that enable them.
