Sat 30 Oct: COP26 Opening Ceremony and Pilgrims’ Procession
Time: 2.00pm, McLennan Arch, Glasgow Green
Join us for a colourful, joyful procession through the streets of Glasgow!
Pilgrimage groups are walking to Glasgow to raise awareness of the climate crisis and demand a fair deal at COP26 for the Global South. It’s a people’s walk for the planet, for people of all faiths (and no faith).
XR Glasgow, Young Christian Climate Network and pilgrimage groups are inviting you to gather at Glasgow Green to officially welcome the pilgrims and other rebels to Glasgow before we go for a family-friendly colourful procession through the streets of Glasgow.
For the procession, we are linking with artists and indigenous leaders to create a unique and special event with a serious message to COP26 to walk the walk, especially for the Global South. The processional sculpture Serpent of Capitalism and the flag art installation Beach of Dreams will form part of the day.
The Camino to COP and Pilgrimage for COP26 are inspired both by the faith tradition of pilgrimage and great justice marches of the past: the Jarrow March in the UK, the Salt March in India and the March on Washington in the US.
Dress: indigo, blue and light green
Messaging for placards: Stop killing the Global South, Fair deal for the Global South, Honour environmental debts, How many COPs do you need to stop killing us
Please wear a mask and practice social distancing when possible.

COP26 sponsorship indicates that the UK Government is going down the route of greenwashing rather than showing the real leadership needed to tackle climate breakdown in this critical decade for climate action. We’re here to send them a message.
